FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAMMER ENTERTAINMENT

ANNOUNCES PLAYBILL FOR 2011/12 SEASON

June 16th 2011– Hamilton, Ontario (For Immediate Release)

Hammer Entertainment celebrates its fourth season with two of the biggest musicals to ever grace a Broadway stage, an incredible musical review making its Hamilton debut, and a show from Hamilton’s favourite playwright.

2011/2012 will be our biggest and best season yet.  Hammer Entertainment’s artistic team is extremely excited to bring to Hamilton not one, but two blockbuster musicals that have never before graced a Hamilton stage.  Combined, our opening and closing musicals raked in 20 Tony Awards, meaning we have an award-winning season lined up.  Artistic Director Jason Dick explains, “Our two big shows this year played on Broadway at almost the same time and swept the Tony Awards for two straight years.  Together they played to sold-out houses for seven years apiece, with 5000 performances between them.  All of our musicals this year have played to very successful runs in Toronto but have never made the trip here to Hamilton.  We aim to fix that.  And how we have arrived at our fourth season without paying tribute to Hamilton’s favourite playwright is beyond me.  That’s something else we will fix this year.”

Transported from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, audiences meet a startling array of characters, ranging from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto, to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. These are the stories and characters of today, the songs for a new world.

Hairspray delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out -- and change is in the air.
